This week we are profiling one of our teachers who grew up at Chosen Dance Academy. Ms. Sara is an alumni of Chosen Dance Academy who started her training here when she was 6 years old. She was a member of the Performing Arts Company winning numerous awards for her group work as well as her solo performances. Ms. Sara graduated with honors and was accepted into the Columbia College dance program on a full dance scholarship. She was a part of the teacher training program at CDA for 4 years and has been an instructor in our Dancing Nest and Dance House Clubhouse program for the past 3 years. Ms. Sara is currently training to be a Professional Company Instructor and we are excited to have her join this program. We love Ms. Sara’s bubbly personality, creative choreography, and zest for life that she share with each of her students. Take a moment to read our interview with Ms. Sara below. We are sure you will love her as much as we do!
Teacher Interview With Ms. Sara Monts
How old where you when you took your first dancing steps?
2 years old
How long have you been dancing?
I’ve been dancing for 18 years.
What is your favorite style of dance?
Tell us about a dance memory that stands out for you.
A dance memory that stands out for me is meeting my best friend on the side of the stage at recital one year. Through dance, we have been best friends for over 10 years and continue to share our passion for dance with each other.
As a child, what do you feel was the most important lesson you learned in the classroom?
Growing up constantly in the dance classroom, I think the most important lesson I learned was, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how “good” you are, your success as a dancer is determined by the character you build, the relationships you find, and the work ethic you create that will impact you for the rest of your life.
Why did you start teaching dance?
I started teaching dance because I love sharing my love and passion for dance.
What do you hope your students take away from your classroom and apply to their daily lives?
I hope my students take away from my classroom that everybody can dance and everyone has the potential to grow, learn, and have fun with movement.
What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?
I wish my students would ask any question that they deem appropriate and important sooner than later. I aim to create an open learning environment where conversations between students and teacher can fuel the learning process.
In your opinion, what makes dance such a great activity and art form?
Dance is a great activity and art form because of the combined creativity and athleticism that is required.
What are you passionate about outside dance?
I’m very passionate about my dance company at Columbia College, CCDC, and I am super involved in everything we do, dance related and non-dance related. I’m also very passionate about working with senior citizens at a retirement home, as that’s where I spend my weekends volunteering and even occasionally teaching dance classes!
