Teacher Interview With Mrs. Chrissy Satterfield
How old where you when you took your first dancing steps?
2 1/2 years old!
How long have you been dancing?
This year will be my 23rd year dancing and I’ve loved every minute of it!
What is your favorite style of dance?
Tap is my favorite style of dance but jazz comes in a close second.
Tell us about a dance memory that stands out for you.
Dancing for over two decades has given me so many dance memories. What stands out the most for me is thinking back on the many competitions I did and how supportive and loving my team was. From the rehearsals before going onstage, cheering from the wings and holding hands during awards, I will never forget the feeling of being in a giant family!
As a child, what do you feel was the most important lesson you learned in the classroom?
Looking back, I’d say that the most important thing I learned was to look at critiques as something that can help you grow as a person and as a dancer.
Why did you start teaching dance?
From the time I was in middle school I knew I wanted to be a dance teacher. I had discovered a love for dance and realized that I wanted it to do it for the rest of my life. I wanted to be able to share my love and passion for this art form with as many people as possible as well as showcase how it can shape who you are or will become.
What do you hope your students take away from your classroom and apply to their daily lives?
Throughout their time with me I hope my students learn characteristics of being a good friend;being supportive, encouraging, honest, nonjudgmental, and a good listener. I also hope my students take away an appreciation for the technique I taught them in the classroom in hopes to continue their dance experiences.
What question do you wish students would ask sooner rather than later?
“Mrs. Chrissy, can you watch me do it?” “Can I try that?” “Can I do that?” There is always a time a place for technique to be practiced, but I absolutely LOVE to watch my students show me what they can do. Dancers have a very high drive and determination when working towards mastering a new skill or technique. I would rather have them ask me to watch them early on in learning, so if any errors are made they can be redirected and retaught for correct execution.
In your opinion, what makes dance such a great activity and art form?
Dance is a means of expression! A dancer is able to tell a story through movements as well as showcase what they have learned to do with their bodies. It isn’t just a great cardio workout, but also helps alleviate stress and releases endorphins. That’s my favorite thing about dance! It is an art form that dates back hundreds of years that has changed and morphed throughout history.
What are you passionate about outside dance?
Besides dance I am very passionate about professional development in and outside of the classroom, as I am an early childhood teacher. I enjoy photography and crafting as well as spending time with my husband, our two cats and guinea pig.
